6 Questions You Should Ask Every Contractor

Make sure to always ask these six questions before working with a contractor.

Working with a contractor, whether they’re installing a new porch enclosure or helping you get your deck installed, is a big commitment. It’s important to ask the right questions before you begin work with them—after all, you want to make sure the job is done the way you need it to be done. Knowing what attributes make for a good contractor is the best way to ensure that the job will be done right. Try asking your contractor these six questions to get a better idea of what they can do.

1. How Long Have You Done This?

Doing your research and finding a contractor who has the experience is always a good idea. If they’ve been in business for a long time or they just have experience at other companies, this is a good sign that they know what they’re doing and are able to get the job done in the right timeframe for the right amount of money.

2. Are You Licensed?

Different localities require different kinds of licenses or credentials, with some not requiring anything whatsoever. Either way, you want to make sure that your contractor has gone through the necessary channels and has the credentials to actually legally perform the work you’re asking of them.

3. What’s the Timeline Look Like?

Before you begin a project, it’s important that you understand how long it should take. Having a projected timeline for how long your construction will take lets you know what you can expect and you can better deal with any changes that may happen on the fly.

4. What About Payment?

You shouldn’t ever be asked or expected to pay the full price of contracting work upfront but a deposit is a normal expectation. Just make sure you’re both on the same page as to how much is due and when so you can make sure payment goes smoothly and there are no disputes.

5. How Do I Get in Touch With You?

Do they prefer to be contacted by phone or email? What are their office hours? Knowing things like this makes for smooth communication, so in the event that a problem does arise, you can easily get in touch with your contractor and work the details out quickly and seamlessly.

6. How Will You Protect My Property?

It’s always important to know what precautions a contractor who is working near your home will take to protect your property from damage. Sometimes, covers need to be placed over outdoor furniture or you just want to be sure that they’re not going to drive a truck up onto your grass and cause damage to your lawn.
