How to Choose the Best Location for Your Deck

Here are some tips for choosing the right location for your new deck.

When planning a deck design, one essential thing to consider is the location. The site of your outdoor living space can entirely change the look of your home. It’s also not something that you can easily change once installed. You can connect your deck to different parts of your house, such as the kitchen and living room. Here are some tips for choosing the right location for your new deck.

Consider Your Privacy Needs

Privacy is one of the first things you should consider when deciding where to place your new deck. As much as possible, have your deck built in the most private areas of your yard. This factor is more important if you build it around a hot tub or swimming pool. If you can’t have absolute privacy in your yard, consider installing additional features, such as a lattice trellis or a privacy screen.

How Will You Access Your Deck?

Access is another factor to consider: how you will access your deck from your home. You can easily reach decks in the front yard, but you may have to go around the house to reach a deck on the backside. If you plan on building your new deck, put it where there won’t be a handicap to walking up and down the stairs. But if you don’t have enough space for a full-sized deck, try building a smaller one with stairs in place and easy access to your home.

Consider the Deck’s Function

How you will use your deck also plays a vital role in choosing its location. Are you planning to use it as an outdoor kitchen or for hosting gatherings with family and friends? Connecting it to your kitchen makes sense if you are using it for outdoor dining. However, if you are building a deck to have a place to relax and enjoy peace, consider it an extension of your living room.

Sun Exposure

Most homeowners install their decks in shady areas to avoid sun damage, but a southern-facing deck will expose you to the sun all day. Be sure the materials for your new deck are appropriate for its sun exposure and provide sufficient protection from the sun’s rays. Deck materials come in wide varieties, such as cedar, pressure-treated wood, and composite materials. Whatever you choose for your new deck, be sure it serves its purpose and provides the protection you require.
